Botox and Dysport

Overview

Botox®

Botox CosmeticBotox® is a medication that relaxes muscles and the wrinkles they create. Most commonly, Botox® is injected into the muscles between the eyebrows that are used to frown. The treatment allows the vertical creases between the eyebrows –affectionately known as the “11s”– to relax and soften.  BOTOX® may also be injected across the forehead and around the eyes to relax the horizontal forehead creases and crow’s feet lines, respectively.

Dysport®

DysportDysport® is a medication with the same active ingredient as Botox®, and therefore has similar efficacy, duration, and cost. Dysport® is another treatment for overactive muscles and the skin wrinkles they cause.  Dysport® is an injection used to alleviate moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. Because untreated facial muscles still work normally, you may still freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, following Dysport® treatments.

Am I a good candidate for Botox® or Dysport® treatment?

You may be a good candidate for Botox® or Dysport® if you are healthy and wish to have a minimally invasive treatment to improve the:

  • Furrows between the brows
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet wrinkles around eyes
  • Dimpling of chin (peau d’orange)
  • Platysmal bands
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Wrinkles of the upper lip
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

What should I expect during the treatment?

Botox® and Dysport® injections are simple office treatments that take approximately 10-15 minutes to administer. Often referred to as quick “lunchtime” procedures, patients can typically return to work and other normal activities immediately after injections.  After examining your facial wrinkles at rest and with motion, Dr. Chung will administer the Botox® or Dysport® in tiny injections directly into the facial muscles responsible for wrinkles and lines. There is minimal discomfort and no anesthesia is required.

What happens after the treatment?

It takes approximately 4 days to 2 weeks to get the full results of your treatment, but the beneficial effects will typically last 3 to 4 months.  You will notice a softening and relaxation of the wrinkles in the treated area, resulting in a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance.  The results are so striking that the majority of patients return every three months for continued treatments.
